ICC - Process Schematic Text:
The process under analysis comprises three major sections: (1) Fermentation; and (2) Butanediol dehydration; and (3) Purification.

Fermentation. The anaerobic fermentation of carbon monoxide is carried out by bacteria, such as the clostridium autoethanogenum. The fermentation can be divided the batch fermentation, and the continuous fermentation. In the batch fermentation, nutrients are fed to a sequence of fermentation vessels, in order to allow microorganisms to multiply until reaching the desired concentration. Once the fermentation vessels contain the minimum cells concentration required for the butanediol fermentation, the continuous fermentation starts. Waste gas and nutrients are continuously supplied, while fermentation broth is removed from the fermenter at a constant mass flow rate. The continuous fermentation produces butanediol and ethanol at butanediol:ethanol ratio of 1:2.

Butanediol dehydration. The fermentation broth is separated from the mixture in a centrifuge and a chromatographic separation comprising an adsorbant. Ethanol is further recovered in a small column as the bottom product. The is then fed to the catalytic dehydration reactor for producing Butadiene. Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and 3-buten-2-ol are generated by side reactions.

Purification. The reactor effluent is compressed and directed to a column, where butadiene is recovered under pressure in liquid form as overhead stream. The bottoms product is routed another distillation column and a pressure-swing system to separate MEK from water and other by-products.

ICC - Short Description: This report presents the costs associated with 1,3-Butadiene production from carbon monoxide in the United States using a process similar to LanzaTech/Invista. First, carbon monoxide (CO) is fermented forming 2,3-butanediol (BDO). Then, BDO is catalytically dehydrogenated to 1,3-Butadiene (BD).
ICC - Main Product: Butadiene

Polychloroprene Production from Butadiene and Chlorine

This study provides an economic analysis of Polychloroprene production starting from butadiene and chlorine, based on a plant located in the United States. In the first step, butadiene is chlorinated, generating dichlorobutenes, which are subjected to an isomerization to convert them to 3,4-dichloro-1-butene. It is then dehydrochlorinated, forming chloroprene. Finally, chloroprene is polymerized to the respective rubber.

The cost analyses presented in this report target a 50 kta (kilo metric ton per annum per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.

Emulsion Styrene Butadiene Rubber Production

This report presents the economics of SBR production starting from butadiene and styrene. The analysis encompasses a plant located in the United States, employing a typical cold emulsion process for generating a non-oil extended, non-staining grade of emulsion SBR (similar to 1502). In this process, an emulsion comprising water, styrene and butadiene is polymerized into a latex, which is then coagulated to form the SBR.
