Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of a typical neutralization under vacuum process for the production of Ammonium Nitrate solution. The study examines a plant located in the United States using gaseous ammonia and nitric acid as raw materials.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Ammonium Nitrate production and related Ammonium Nitrate production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Ammonium Nitrate production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Ammonium Nitrate plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Ammonium Nitrate plant operating costs (Opex).
The Ammonium Nitrate production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Ammonium Nitrate plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Ammonium Nitrate plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Product
Ammonium Nitrate. Ammonium Nitrate (a.k.a. AN) is an inorganic salt with colorless and odorless crystals that are soluble in most organic solvents. The salt is hardly found in nature, for its high water solubility. It was first described in 1659 and, currently, is the most commercially important ammonium compound in production volume and usage terms. Its great importance comes from the fact that the salt incorporates nitrogen and makes it readily available, in both of the forms that plants and crops use: nitrate ion and ammonia.
Raw Materials
Ammonia. Ammonia (NH3) is one of the most produced synthetic chemicals worldwide. The main application of this world class commodity is in nitrogen fertilizers, followed by the synthesis of nitric acid. It is also used, to a lesser extent, in several other applications such as pulping of wood and as ingredient in household cleaners and drugs. Ammonia is produced basically by the reaction between nitrogen and hydrogen, in a 1:3 stoichiometric ratio. Its production routes are related to the source of the hydrogen used, being steam reforming the main one.
Nitric Acid. Nitric acid is a strong oxidizing acid used in the production of fertilizers, explosives, and in various chemical syntheses. It also plays a critical role in metal processing and the production of nitrates. Nitric acid is produced by oxidizing ammonia via the Ostwald process and is stored as a liquid. Its ability to act as both an oxidant and a nitrating agent makes it a key component in the production of ammonium nitrate for both agricultural and industrial applications.

Ammonium Nitrate Porous Prills Production
In this study, the production costs of Ammonium Nitrate porous prills (AN-PP) are reviewed. The process examined is a typical vacuum neutralization process using ammonia and nitric acid for ammonium nitrate production. It is then evaporated and transformed into AN-PP. The economic analysis presented assumes a plant constructed in the United States.
