Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of a typical Aluminum Hydroxide Gel production process from aluminum sulfate and soda ash in the United States. In the process, soda ash and aluminum sulfate are dissolved in water and undergo a neutralization reaction to produce the aluminum hydroxide gel.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Aluminum Hydroxide production and related Aluminum Hydroxide production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Aluminum Hydroxide production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Aluminum Hydroxide plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Aluminum Hydroxide plant operating costs (Opex).
The Aluminum Hydroxide production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Aluminum Hydroxide plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Aluminum Hydroxide plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Schematic
The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) neutralization; and (2) separation and finishing.
Neutralization. Initially, raw materials solutions are prepared by diluting aluminum sulfate and sodium carbonate in tanks equipped with stirring systems. Both solutions are fed to an agitated-type reactor where the neutralization reaction takes place at moderate agitation. The reaction product, a slurry containing the precipitated Aluminum Hydroxide gel formed, is directed to separation steps, downstream.
Separation and finishing. The suspension from neutralization area is fed to a rotary vacuum filter for separation of the Aluminum Hydroxide from the reaction mixture and washing out the salts contained in the filter cake. The filter cake is then conveyed to a spray dryer for powder formation, and subsequently cooled to ambient temperature, ground to the desired particle size and classified by sieving. Finally, the Aluminum Hydroxide gel powder is packed in bags and then sent to warehouses at the facility’s OSBL to be stored.

Aluminum Hydroxide Production from Bauxite
This study examines the economics of Aluminum Hydroxide (Aluminum Trihydroxide, ATH) production from bauxite via the typical Bayer process, in a plant located in the United States. In this process, bauxite is dissolved in a sodium hydroxide solution under pressure at elevated temperatures, solid impurities are separated, the Aluminum Hydroxide solution is subjected to crystallization, then filtered and dried.

Polylactic Acid Production from Raw Sugar
This study approaches the economics of Polylactic Acid production from raw sugar in Germany. Initially, raw sugar is hydrolyzed into invert sugars. The invert sugars are then fermented to produce lactic acid, in a process similar to Cargill process. The lactic acid is oligomerized and then depolymerized into lactide, which is finally polymerized to yield PLA by ring opening polymerization, similar to the one proposed by NatureWorks.
