Commodity Production Costs Report
Trichlorfon Production
Trichlorfon Plant Capital & Operating Cost Analysis | United States | Q3 2025
This report presents the economics of Trichlorfon production from dimethyl hydrogen phosphite and chloral. In this typical process examined, dimethyl hydrogen phosphite reacts with chloral producing Trichlorfon.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Trichlorfon production and related Trichlorfon production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Trichlorfon production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Trichlorfon plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Trichlorfon plant operating costs (Opex).
The Trichlorfon production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Trichlorfon plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Trichlorfon plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Product
Trichlorfon. Trichlorfon (a.k.a. Metrifonate) is a is a moderately toxic organophosphate insecticide. It can be used against the blood fluke caused by schistosomiasis. Trichlorfon is a stomach poison insecticide used on foliage for chewing insects and in dry sugar bait for fly control. Above pH 6, Trichlorfon is converted rapidly to dichlorvos, which accounts for its toxicity. Due to its toxicity and being metabolised to dichlorvos in plants, it was banned in a number of contries, including those of Europe Union, Brazil, New Zealand, and Argentina.
Raw Materials
Dimethyl Hydrogen Phosphite. Dimethyl hydrogen phosphite is an organophosphorus compound used as an intermediate in the synthesis of flame retardants, pesticides, and plasticizers. It also acts as a reagent in organic synthesis for phosphorylation reactions. Manufactured via the esterification of phosphorus trichloride and methanol, it is stored as a colorless liquid. Its versatility in various chemical reactions makes it valuable in producing fire-resistant materials and agrochemicals.
Chloral. Chloral (trichloroacetaldehyde) is a reactive intermediate used in the production of insecticides, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals. It is most commonly known as the precursor to the sedative chloral hydrate. Synthesized by the chlorination of ethanol, it is stored as a liquid under controlled conditions. Its high reactivity with water and alcohols is exploited in both organic synthesis and specialty chemical manufacturing.
