Commodity Production Costs Report
Dichlorvos Production
Dichlorvos Plant Capital & Operating Cost Analysis | United States | Q2 2025
This report presents the economics of a typical Dichlorvos (DDVP) production process from trimethyl phosphite and chloral in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Dichlorvos production and related Dichlorvos production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Dichlorvos production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Dichlorvos plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Dichlorvos plant operating costs (Opex).
The Dichlorvos production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Dichlorvos plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Dichlorvos plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Product
Dichlorvos. Dichlorvos (a.k.a. DDVP, 2,2-Dichlorovinyl Dimethyl Phosphate) is an organophosphate. It is a rapid-acting insecticide with strong fumigant action, used in bait and aerosols for flies and mosquitoes, in public health, protecting stored product from insects, and incorporated in slow-release plastic strips and in pet collars against parasites. Dichlorvos act by interfering with the activities of cholinesterase, an enzyme that is essential for the proper working of the nervous systems of both humans and insects. Dichlorvos is manufactured by a reaction between chloral and trimethyl phosphite. It is also produced by the degradation of trichlorfon.
Raw Materials
Chloral. Chloral (trichloroacetaldehyde) is a reactive intermediate used in the production of insecticides, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals. It is most commonly known as the precursor to the sedative chloral hydrate. Synthesized by the chlorination of ethanol, it is stored as a liquid under controlled conditions. Its high reactivity with water and alcohols is exploited in both organic synthesis and specialty chemical manufacturing.
Trimethyl Phosphite. Trimethyl phosphite is an organophosphorus compound used as a reagent and intermediate in organic synthesis, particularly in the production of flame retardants, agrochemicals, and plasticizers. It also serves as a ligand in transition metal complex formation. It is produced by reacting phosphorus trichloride with methanol, resulting in a colorless, flammable liquid. Its reactivity with halides and esters makes it valuable in synthesizing specialty chemicals and materials with enhanced performance attributes.
