Hydrogen Production from Coal

Hydrogen Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs

9000 MM Nm3/y United States-based plant | 107 Pages | Issue E | Q3 2024
Starting at $999 USD | See Report Editions Prices

This report presents the economics of Hydrogen production from coal gasification in the United States. In this process, coal undergoes partial oxidation, yielding syngas. Then, Hydrogen from syngas is enriched and purified.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Hydrogen production and related Hydrogen production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Hydrogen production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Hydrogen plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Hydrogen plant operating costs (Opex).

The Hydrogen production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Hydrogen plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Hydrogen plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Hydrogen Production Cost Report Process Overview
Product

Hydrogen. Hydrogen (a.k.a. H2), the lightest of all gases, is an important chemical feedstock, that undergoes many reactions, forming compounds with almost all elements. Since H2 is an energy carrier, it has been considered for stationary power and transportation applications.

Raw Material

Coal. Coal is a fossil fuel primarily used for electricity generation and as a key raw material in steel production through coking processes. It is also employed in cement manufacturing and as a source of heat and energy in various industries. Extracted from underground mines or surface deposits, coal is processed into different grades based on its carbon content and calorific value, making it a vital component in energy security and industrial growth, particularly in regions with abundant reserves.

Ammonia Production from Coal

This report examines the costs related to Ammonia production from coal in China. In this process, coal undergoes pyrolysis, producing coke. It is then subjected to a gasification process. Coke reacts with steam and oxygen yielding mainly carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen and carbon dioxide (CO2). CO and water are shifted to CO2 and hydrogen. Finally, nitrogen and hydrogen react to produce ammonia.
