This study also approaches the economics of Ethylbenzene production from benzene and polymer grade ethylene in the United States. The process examined in this study is a conventional liquid-phase alkylation process using a aluminum chloride catalyst.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Ethylbenzene production and related Ethylbenzene production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Ethylbenzene production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Ethylbenzene plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Ethylbenzene plant operating costs (Opex).

The Ethylbenzene production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Ethylbenzene plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Ethylbenzene plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Ethylbenzene Production Cost Report Process Overview
Product

Ethylbenzene. Ethylbenzene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is used virtually exclusively as an intermediate for the production of styrene, raw material for polystyrene, which is a common plastic. It is produced in large volume being a large volume commodity chemical and its main production route is via alkylation, in liquid-phase or vapour-phase, of benzene with ethylene.

Raw Materials

Ethylene. Ethylene is known as a key building block for the petrochemical industry, being one of the largest-volume petrochemical produced worldwide. It is widely used as chemical intermediate in the production of several end products, including plastics, resins and fibers. Ethylene is largely produced by thermal cracking of petroleum-based feedstocks, in the presence of steam. It is stored in a liquid state under high pressure or at low temperatures. However, ethylene is, most of times, directly supplied to its consumers.

Benzene. Benzene (C6H6) is a flammable and volatile liquid. As the most simple aromatic hydrocarbon, it is used as an intermediate to produce many important chemicals, such as styrene (raw material for polystyrene and synthetic rubber), cyclohexane (used in nylon production), alkylbenzenes (used in detergent industry), aniline (used to produce dyes and polyurethanes), and chlorobenzenes. Also, benzene is used to produce pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, plastics, and pesticides. It occurs naturally in crude oil and coal tar.
