Calcium Carbonate Production from Lime and Soda Ash

Calcium Carbonate Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs

This report presents the economics of Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) production from lime and sodium carbonate in the United States, via a conventional lime-soda process. In this process, calcium hydroxide is generated by treating lime with water. Then, calcium hydroxide reacts with soda ash. Besides PCC, an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide is also obtained as product.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Calcium Carbonate production and related Calcium Carbonate production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Calcium Carbonate production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Calcium Carbonate plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Calcium Carbonate plant operating costs (Opex).

The Calcium Carbonate production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Calcium Carbonate plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Calcium Carbonate plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Calcium Carbonate Production Cost Report Process Overview
Products

Calcium Carbonate. Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) is a compound commonly found as a white mineral (calcite) which occurs naturally in chalks, limestones and marbles. These rocks are classified as limestones, a general term used for a rock containing varying proportions of calcite and dolomite. The quality of calcium carbonate depends on some factors: purity, whiteness, homogeneity, and thickness.

Caustic Soda. Causic soda (NaOH), also known as sodium hydroxide, is a major inorganic used in several industries. Most of caustic soda production is used in the manufacture of chemicals, such as propylene oxide and sodium salts. Electrolysis of sodium chloride accounts for most of today’s installed capacity for caustic soda production, which also generates chlorine.

Raw Materials

Soda Ash. Sodium Carbonate, also known as soda ash, is the disodium salt of carbonic acid. This chemical can be obtained from natural deposits as well as synthetically produced (through the Solvay process). Soda ash is widely used in production of glass, chemicals, soaps, detergents, pulp and paper.

Lime. Lime, also known as quicklime, is formed by the thermal decomposition of limestone. This material is composed primarily of calcium oxide, with magnesium oxide as a secondary component. It is an alkaline and powerful dehydrating agent.

Ethylene from PVC-Rich Mixed Plastic Waste

This report provides an economic analysis of Ethylene production via pyrolysis of mixed plastic waste rich in PVC in the United States. Initially, the chlorine content in the main stream is removed by reacting it with calcium carbonate. Then, the chlorine-depleted plastic stream is submitted to pyrolysis. The resulting pyrolysis gases are first sent to primary separation and finally distilled, yielding ethylene and other by-products.
