Report Abstract
This report presents the economic analysis of Propionaldehyde production from ethylene. In this process, ethylene undergoes a hydroformylation reaction to produce propionaldehyde. The economic analysis presented is based on a plant constructed in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Propionaldehyde production and related Propionaldehyde production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Propionaldehyde production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Propionaldehyde plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Propionaldehyde plant operating costs (Opex).
The Propionaldehyde production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Propionaldehyde plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Propionaldehyde plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Propionaldehyde. Propionaldehyde is an aldehyde used as an intermediate in the production of plastics, rubber chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Its reactivity makes it a versatile building block for a variety of chemical syntheses. Propionaldehyde is produced via the hydroformylation of ethylene and is stored as a liquid. Its strong solvent properties also make it useful in coatings and as a precursor to more complex organic compounds, such as propionic acid and alkyl resins.
Raw Materials
Ethylene. Ethylene is known as a key building block for the petrochemical industry, being one of the largest-volume petrochemical produced worldwide. It is widely used as chemical intermediate in the production of several end products, including plastics, resins and fibers. Ethylene is largely produced by thermal cracking of petroleum-based feedstocks, in the presence of steam. It is stored in a liquid state under high pressure or at low temperatures. However, ethylene is, most of times, directly supplied to its consumers.
Syngas. Synthesis Gas is a gas mixture mainly composed of carbon monoxide (CO) and Hydrogen (H2). It is a raw material for the production of various products, such as methanol, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, dimethyl ether, oxo alcohols and many other chemicals. Syngas may be produced from both fossil sources (e.g. coal, petroleum or natural gas) and renewable materials, such as biomass or wood. Synthesis gas is produced industrially via different routes including steam methane reforming, partial oxidation, and dry reforming. Its composition can significantly vary from the production method used.
