ICC - Process Overview Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-overview/008-B.jpg
ICC - Process Overview Text:
Product

Isopropanol. Isopropanol is a widely used solvent in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and cleaning products. It is valued for its rapid evaporation and disinfectant properties, making it a key ingredient in hand sanitizers and surface cleaners. Isopropanol is produced by the hydration of propylene and is stored as a liquid. It is easy to transport and has become even more critical in the hygiene sector.

Raw Materials

Propylene. Propylene, the main raw material consumed, is a colorless gas at room temperature. It is a low-boiling, flammable, and highly volatile gas, with molecular formula C3H6. Propylene reacts vigorously with oxidizing materials. It may be mildly irritating to the nose, throat, and respiratory tract; propylene has low acute toxicity from inhalation. PG Propylene has been mainly produced as ethylene manufacturing co-product (via steam cracking of paraffinic hydrocarbons) and by-product of petroleum refining (separation from refinery gas). Most recently, amid a tight propylene market, new and novel lower-cost chemical processes for on-purpose propylene production have emerged.
Chemicals.

ICC - Process Schematic Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-schematics/008-B.jpg
ICC - Process Schematic Text:
The process under analysis comprehends two major sections: (1) Isopropanol synthesis; and (2) purification.

Isopropanol synthesis. Polymer grade propylene is mixed with water, vaporized, superheated to the required reaction temperature and fed to the reactor. The reaction forms, in addition to Isopropyl Alcohol, minor amounts of side products, including diisopropyl ether, n-propyl alcohol and acetone. The reactor product stream is is sent to a Washing Column, where Isopropyl Alcohol and side products are absorbed in water and separated from unreacted propylene. The washing column liquid effluent is routed to the purification, while the gaseous overhead product is compressed and recycled to the reactor.

Purification. The crude isopropanol is directed to a light ends column, where diisopropyl ether (generated in side reactions) is separated. The ether-free crude Isopropanol is transferred to the azeotrope column for removal of water and high boiling impurities. The overheads product from this column comprises an azeotropic mixture of Isopropanol and water. This mixture is separated by means azeotropic distillation using an azeotroping agent - the separated water leaves the process as wastewater.

ICC - Short Description: This report approaches the economics of Isopropyl Alcohol production from Polymer Grade (PG) Propylene. This study is based on a plant located in the United States. Isopropyl Alcohol is obtained via a typical direct propylene hydration process which is carried out in the vapour phase using phosphoric acid on silica as catalyst.

Other Isopropanol Production Cost Reports

Isopropyl Alcohol Production from RG Propylene

This report presents the economics of Isopropyl Alcohol production from refinery grade (RG) propylene via a typical indirect propylene hydration process. In this process, RG propylene reacts with sulfuric acid to form isopropyl alcohol sulfates. Those sulfates are then reacted with water to form Isopropanol. The study assumes a plant located in the United States.
