Report Abstract
This report approaches the economics of Isopropyl Alcohol production from Polymer Grade (PG) Propylene. This study is based on a plant located in the United States. Isopropyl Alcohol is obtained via a typical direct propylene hydration process which is carried out in the vapour phase using phosphoric acid on silica as catalyst.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Isopropanol production and related Isopropanol production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Isopropanol production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Isopropanol plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Isopropanol plant operating costs (Opex).
The Isopropanol production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Isopropanol plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Isopropanol plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Schematic

The process under analysis comprehends two major sections: (1) Isopropanol synthesis; and (2) purification.
Isopropanol synthesis. Polymer grade propylene is mixed with water, vaporized, superheated to the required reaction temperature and fed to the reactor. The reaction forms, in addition to Isopropyl Alcohol, minor amounts of side products, including diisopropyl ether, n-propyl alcohol and acetone. The reactor product stream is is sent to a Washing Column, where Isopropyl Alcohol and side products are absorbed in water and separated from unreacted propylene. The washing column liquid effluent is routed to the purification, while the gaseous overhead product is compressed and recycled to the reactor.
Purification. The crude isopropanol is directed to a light ends column, where diisopropyl ether (generated in side reactions) is separated. The ether-free crude Isopropanol is transferred to the azeotrope column for removal of water and high boiling impurities. The overheads product from this column comprises an azeotropic mixture of Isopropanol and water. This mixture is separated by means azeotropic distillation using an azeotroping agent - the separated water leaves the process as wastewater.

Other Isopropanol Production Cost Reports
Isopropyl Alcohol Production from RG Propylene
This report presents the economics of Isopropyl Alcohol production from refinery grade (RG) propylene via a typical indirect propylene hydration process. In this process, RG propylene reacts with sulfuric acid to form isopropyl alcohol sulfates. Those sulfates are then reacted with water to form Isopropanol. The study assumes a plant located in the United States.
