Commodity Production Costs Report
Tetrahydrofuran Production
Tetrahydrofuran Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs
It presents the economics of Tetrahydrofuran (THF) production from butanediol (BDO) in the United States, using a dehydration process similar to Davy Process Technology (DPT). The BDO is very readily cyclized to THF with elimination of water by acid catalysis.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Tetrahydrofuran production and related Tetrahydrofuran production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Tetrahydrofuran production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Tetrahydrofuran plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Tetrahydrofuran plant operating costs (Opex).
The Tetrahydrofuran production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Tetrahydrofuran plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Tetrahydrofuran plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Product
Tetrahydrofuran. THF is a five-membered cyclic ether with wide application in the chemical industry. Its most important area of application from the standpoint of quantity and turnover is polymerization with simultaneous ring opening to give poly(tetramethylene oxide). THF is also used extensively in the varnish and film industries and as a co-solvent for printing inks and adhesives.
Raw Material
Butanediol. Butanediol is a versatile organic chemical used as an intermediate in the production of a wide range of industrial and consumer products. It plays a crucial role in manufacturing polyurethanes, engineering plastics, and fibers, and is also used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, solvents, and coatings. Butanediol is typically produced through the hydrogenation of maleic anhydride or succinic acid. It is handled and stored as a stable liquid at room temperature, and its demand continues to grow in sectors such as automotive, construction, and electronics.
