Syngas Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs
This report presents the economics of Syngas production from a mixed plastic waste via a gasification process. In this process, part of the plastic waste is also submitted to pyrolysis for synthetic crude oil (syncrude) and fuel gas generation. The economic analysis provided assumes a plant constructed in the United States.

The Syngas plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Syngas plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Products
Syngas. Synthesis gas is a gas mixture mainly composed of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2). It is a raw material for the production of various products, such as methanol, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, dimethyl ether, oxo alcohols and many other chemicals. Syngas may be produced from both fossil sources (e.g. coal, petroleum or natural gas) and renewable materials, such as biomass or wood. Synthesis gas is produced industrially via different routes including steam methane reforming, partial oxidation, and dry reforming. Its composition can significantly vary from the production method used. In the process under analysis, it is assumed that syngas with a hydrogen to carbon monoxide molar ratio of 1.75:1 is provided by a nearby plant via natural gas partial oxidation. The composition of the syngas considered in the present analysis is (by volume): 61.3% of hydrogen, 35.0%of carbon monoxide, 0.5% of methane, 2.5% of carbon dioxide, 0.3% of nitrogen, and 0.4% of water.
Fuel.
Heavy Hydrocarbons. Heavy hydrocarbons are large molecules found in crude oil and other sources, used as feedstock in refining and petrochemical processes. They are essential for producing fuels, lubricants, and bitumen. Heavy hydrocarbons are typically stored as viscous liquids or solids and undergo cracking or reforming to produce lighter, more valuable fractions used in various industries.
Raw Material
Mixed Plastic Waste. Mixed Plastic Waste (37.1% LDPE, 8.5% PET, 8.0% PP; 35.9% other plastics) is a heterogeneous stream of plastics used primarily in recycling and energy recovery processes. These materials are often processed into lower-grade products or fuel. The composition of this waste varies widely, complicating recycling but providing feedstock for pyrolysis or incineration, where it can be converted into chemicals or energy.
