Commodity Production Costs Report

1-Hexene Production from Synfuels

Hexene Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs

220 kta United States-based plant | 107 Pages | Issue B | Q3 2024
Starting at $799 USD | See Report Editions Prices

In this report, it is approached the economics of 1-Hexene production via extractive distillation from synthetic fuels (synfuels), using an industrial process similar to the technology owned by Sasol. The economic analysis assumes a plant located in the United States.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Hexene production and related Hexene production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Hexene production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Hexene plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Hexene plant operating costs (Opex).

The Hexene production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Hexene plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Hexene plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Hexene Production Cost Report Process Overview
Product

1-Hexene. Hexene is any alkene isomer with molecular formula C6H12. The most important Hexene is the 1-Hexene, which is largely employed as a comonomer in the production of polyethylene (HDPE and LLDPE). It is also used in the production of linear aldehyde heptanal. On an industrial scale, 1-Hexene is typically produced via ethylene oligomerization and on-purpose processes, such as extractive distillation from Fischer-Tropsch hydrocarbons.

Raw Material

Synthetic Fuel. Synthetic fuel refers to liquid or gaseous fuels produced from alternative feedstocks through chemical processes, often aiming to reduce reliance on crude oil. These fuels can include Fischer-Tropsch products derived from coal or biomass, and they are used in transportation and heating applications. Synthesized using methods such as gasification and liquefaction, synthetic fuels provide a pathway to decarbonize the energy sector and diversify energy sources while meeting specific performance and environmental standards.

1-Hexene Production from Raffinate-2

This analysis approaches the economics of 1-Hexene production from raffinate-2, based on a process similar to the CPT Process licensed by Lummus. Initially, 2-butene from raffinate-2 is isomerized to 1-butene. Then, 1-butene is reacted with itself to form 3-hexene and ethylene. The 3-hexene is finally isomerized to 1-hexene. The analysis considers a facility erected in the United States.
