Commodity Production Costs Report
Technical Grade Glycerol Production
Glycerol Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs
This report presents the economics of a process for Technical Grade Glycerol production from crude glycerol in the United States. This treatment consists of pretreatment and vacuum distillation steps.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Glycerol production and related Glycerol production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Glycerol production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Glycerol plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Glycerol plant operating costs (Opex).
The Glycerol production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Glycerol plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Glycerol plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) Pretreatment; and (2) Distillation.
Pretreatment. The crude glycerol is alkalinized to saponify fats and fatty acid impurities. Then it is fed to an evaporator, where the glycerol is evaporated, leaving behind heavy ends.
Distillation. The vapors are fed to a distillation column. Technical Grade Glycerol is produced as the side stream and both light and remaining heavy impurities are removed at the top and bottom of the column.
