Fiber-Grade Adipic Acid Production from Crude Adipic Acid
Adipic Acid Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs
This report presents the economics of high-purity Adipic Acid production starting from a crude adipic acid stream from a conventional two-stage oxidation process (similar to Invista technology). The crude stream passes through a series of purification steps that include centrifugation, crystallization and drying. The process under analysis assumes a plant located in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Adipic Acid production and related Adipic Acid production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Adipic Acid production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Adipic Acid plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Adipic Acid plant operating costs (Opex).

The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) Adipic Acid Purification; and (2) Impurities Treatment.
Adipic Acid Purification. The solid crude Adipic Acid is mixed with process water in such a way that impurities present in the acid are dissolved and the resulting solution is submitted to crystallization. The slurry from crystallization then passes through a centrifuge and the product crystals are separated from mother liquor. The solid Adipic Acid is dried, yielding fiber-grade Adipic Acid.
Impurities Treatment. The impurities separated from crude Adipic Acid are sent to a distillation column, a vacuum crystallizer and a centrifuge to remove water from catalysts and acids. Finally, the solid product is diluted and passed through ion-exchange resins, for separation of catalysts residues (cooper and vanadium used in the cyclohexane two-stage oxidation plant for crude Adipic Acid production) and an aqueous stream, containing 50 wt% of dibasic acids (adipic, glutaric and succinic acids) is obtained as by-product.
