Report Abstract
This report analyses the economics of Rigid Boardstock Polyester Polyurethane production from polymeric isocyanate (PMPPI) and a polyester polyol in the United States. These raw materials enable the formation of a highly cross-linked molecular structure.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Polyurethane production and related Polyurethane production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Polyurethane production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Polyurethane plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Polyurethane plant operating costs (Opex).
The Polyurethane production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Polyurethane plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Polyurethane plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Product
Polyester Polyurethane. Polyester Polyurethane is a type of polyurethane made from polyester polyols, used in foams, adhesives, and coatings. It is valued for its durability, abrasion resistance, and flexibility in various industries. This material is crucial in cushioning, insulation, and industrial coatings.
Raw Materials
Polyester Polyol. Polyester polyol is a key component in producing polyurethane foams, coatings, and elastomers. It reacts with isocyanates to form polymers with diverse mechanical properties. Synthesized from the polycondensation of diacids and diols, it is stored as a viscous liquid. Its molecular structure allows tailoring material properties for applications ranging from insulation to footwear.
PMPPI. Polymethylene polyphenyl isocyanate (PMPPI) is a key raw material for producing rigid polyurethane foams used in insulation, construction, and refrigeration. It is also employed in adhesives and coatings. Manufactured through the reaction of aniline with formaldehyde and subsequent phosgenation, PMPPI is stored as a brown liquid. Its ability to form highly crosslinked polymer structures makes it crucial for thermal insulation applications.

Toluene Diisocyanate from Toluene (Liquid-Phase Phosgenation)
This report presents the economics of a typical liquid-phase phosgenation process for Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI) production from toluene and chlorine in the USA. Initially, toluene is submitted to a dinitration to produce dinitrotoluene (DNT), which is then hydrogenated to toluenediamine (TDA). This TDA is reacted with phosgene in liquid phase to yield TDI product. The phosgene used is generated from chlorine in an on-site unit.
