Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Nicotinamide production from 2-methyl-1,5-pentanediamine (MPDA) in the United States. Initially, MPDA undergoes cyclic hydrogenation that gives 3-methylpiperidine. This compound is then dehydrogenated, yielding 3-methylpyridine, which reacts with ammonia to form 3-cyanopyridine. Finally, it is hydrolyzed to nicotinamide.

Nicotinamide. Nicotinamide (a.k.a. Niacinamide, Nicotinic Amide, NAA) is the amide of nicotinic acid. It is a water-soluble vitamin and is part of the vitamin B group. Nicotinamide is a component of the coenzymes NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and NADP (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate). These coenzymes are indispensable for many biochemical reactions in all living cells. Nicotinamide is available either from the amidation of nicotinic acid or from partial hydrolysis of 3-cyanopyridine, which is obtained by ammoxidation of 3-methylpyridine. Nicotinamide is used to enrich foods, namely cereal products, and is also present in multivitamins drinks and tablets.
Raw Material
Methylpentanediamine. Methylpentanediamine (MPDA) is a key chemical intermediate used in the production of polyamides and specialty polymers.
