ICC - Process Overview Text:
Product

Adiponitrile. Adiponitrile is an organic compound used as a precursor to nylon 6,6, an important polymer for textiles, plastics, and automotive applications. Its role in producing high-strength materials is critical to multiple industries. Adiponitrile is synthesized through the electrochemical hydrodimerization of acrylonitrile and is stored as a liquid. Its importance in the production of durable, high-performance materials makes it a key industrial chemical.

Raw Materials

Electricity. Electricity is a versatile energy source utilized across various sectors, including manufacturing, transportation, and residential applications. It serves as the driving force for machinery, lighting, and electronic devices, and is increasingly employed in electrochemical processes and the production of hydrogen through electrolysis. Generated from renewable sources like wind, solar, and hydro, as well as fossil fuels and nuclear power, electricity plays a critical role in advancing sustainable energy solutions and enhancing efficiency in industrial operations.
Chemicals.
Acrylonitrile. Acrylonitrile is a molecule having a carbon-carbon double bond conjugated with a nitrile group. It is a very reactive compound, since it is polar (due to the presence of the nitrogen heteroatom) and unsaturated. Currently, acrylonitrile is mainly produced by the ammoxidation of propylene and by the ammoxidation of propane. Both processes generate acetonitrile and hydrogen cyanide as by-products. As a highly reactive chemical, acrylonitrile serves as an intermediate to produce a range of chemicals, including antioxidants, pharmaceuticals and especially polymers. Due to the possibility of spontaneous polymerization in the presence of strong alkali or when exposed to light, high-purity acrylonitrile product must be stored or transported with polymerization inhibitors. Storage tanks or containers may be constructed with carbon or stainless steel.

ICC - Process Schematic Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-schematics/364-C.jpg
ICC - Process Schematic Text:
The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) Electrodymerization and (2) Adiponitrile Separation and Purification.

Electrodymerization. Acrylonitrile and water are fed to an electrolyzer, in the form of a filter press, with polypropylene blocks containing lead anodes and lead-silver alloy cathodes on opposite sides. The acrylonitrile is submitted to electrodimerization in such electrolytic cells, in which the catholyte and the anolyte are separated by a cation-permeable membrane so that Adiponitrile is produced. A dilute aqueous sulfuric acid, used as an anolyte, is circulated through the anolyte compartment. The catholyte consists of acrylonitrile, Adiponitrile, quaternary ammonium aromatic sulfonate (QAS), and water. The oxygen formed is released from the circulating anolyte, while a fraction of the liquid flowing in the cathode part, containing the Adiponitrile formed, is withdrawn, and directed to separation and purification steps downstream.

Adiponitrile Separation and Purification. The cathode effluent containing the Adiponitrile is passed through extractors for the removal of residual acrylonitrile and quaternary ammonium aromatic sulfonate, which are further purified and recycled. Subsequently the extraction, purified Adiponitrile is obtained after four distillation steps that remove light and heavy impurities and residual acrylonitrile.

ICC - Short Description: This report presents the economics of Adiponitrile production from acrylonitrile. In the process examined, acrylonitrile is passed through an electrodimerization with hydrogenation that generates adiponitrile. The economic analysis is based on a plant constructed in the United States.
