About Butyl Rubber

About Polyisobutylene. Polyisobutylene (a.k.a. PIB, Butyl Rubber) is a thermoplastic polymer/elastomer, with high viscosity, and for that, its main use is in the lubricant industry. Being extremely viscous also allows polyisobutylene to be used in a variety of products, such as gums, detergents, adhesives and many others. PIB is the core component in butyl rubber (about 98% PIB and 2% isoprene by weight), its second main use. It’s worth noting that it is the only rubber like elastomer that is gas impermeable.

Polyisobutylene Handling. PIB is transported and stored in its liquid, highly viscous form. It is not flammable and very little toxic, although it should be kept away from heat sources, since it might decompose into its monomer, isobutylene, which is extremely flammable. Therefore, the polymer transportation is not regulated at temperature lower than 100°C. It should be stored away from strong acids, oxidizing agents, sources of ignition and direct sunlight. It must be stored in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Bulk storage does not require any special measure. The transportation should be done in closed containers that are upright and secure.

Polyisobutylene Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Polyisobutylene are listed below.

  • Isobutylene (catalyzed polymerization)

Polyisobutylene Uses. The uses and applications of Polyisobutylene may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Polyisobutylene are heavy liquid; medium liquid; and low liquid (depending on the molecular weight of PIB in the solution, ranging from 300 to 250000 amu).
