About Isoprene Isobutyl Rubber
About Isoprene Isobutyl Rubber. Butyl Rubber (a.k.a. Isobutylene Isoprene Rubber, IIR) is an organic compound, in the (co)polymer class. IIR is a copolymer, consisting of about 98% polyisobutylene and 2% isoprene. It is a colorless (sometimes faint yellow) material, substitute to natural rubber, and began to be industrially manufactured in the 1940s, as supplies to USA troops in World War II. Currently, butyl rubber has numerous applications, being produced in several molecular weights, and IIR’s halogenated derivates have been growing in production each year.
Isoprene Isobutyl Rubber Handling. Isobutylene isoprene rubber is not flammable and very little toxic, although it should be kept away from heat sources, since it might decompose into flammable/toxic hydrocarbons. IIR is packaged in 34 kg bales wrapped in synthetic polymer films, and shipped in crates or skids depending on customer needs. IIR is considered a nonhazardous material for shipping and storage. Stabilized grades should be used within five years of their date of manufacture, after which the molar mass may decrease significantly. The molar mass of grades without antioxidant can decrease after six months of storage.
Isoprene Isobutyl Rubber Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Isoprene Isobutyl Rubber are listed below.
- Isobutylene + isoprene (precipitation process, using methyl chloride as diluent),
- C5 – C7 hydrocarbon (solvent) + aluminum alkyl halide (initiator)
Isoprene Isobutyl Rubber Uses. The uses and applications of Butyl Rubber may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Butyl Rubber are latex; stabilized; chlorine-containing elastomer; and low molecular weight (liquid).
