Commodity Production Costs Report
Urea Formaldehyde Resins Production from Urea and Methanol
Urea Formaldehyde Resins Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs
This report presents the economics of Urea Formaldehyde Resins production, starting from urea and methanol. In this process, methanol is converted to Formaldehyde over a silver catalyst. The generated formaldehyde is then reacted with urea and, finally, polymerized to form the Urea Formaldehyde Resin. The study considers a plant located in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Urea Formaldehyde Resins production and related Urea Formaldehyde Resins production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Urea Formaldehyde Resins production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Urea Formaldehyde Resins plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Urea Formaldehyde Resins plant operating costs (Opex).
The Urea Formaldehyde Resins production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Urea Formaldehyde Resins plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Urea Formaldehyde Resins plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Product
Urea Formaldehyde Resins. Urea Formaldehyde Resins (a.k.a. UF) is a thermosetting synthetic amino resin, with different characteristics depending on its composition. The urea:formaldehyde ratio is an important parameter, near to unit values the resulting resin doesn’t have any adhesive properties. If this ratio is reduced in the course of the formation reaction, the resulting resin will possess highly adhesive properties. Urea-formaldehyde makes up 80% of all amino resins produced worldwide.
Raw Materials
Methanol. Methanol is one of the most important chemical raw materials, used as a solvent, starting material in the production of chemicals and in the fuel sector. Currently, more than 95% of commercial methanol is synthetically produced from synthesis gas, or syngas, which is a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
Urea. Urea is a nitrogen-rich fertilizer essential for modern agriculture. It is also used in the production of plastics, resins, and pharmaceuticals. Urea is synthesized from ammonia and carbon dioxide and is typically stored in solid granules or liquid form. Its widespread use in farming helps boost crop yields worldwide.

Methanol Production from Natural Gas (Combined Reforming)
This study presents the economics of large-scale Methanol production from natural gas in the United States. In this process, natural gas is first converted into synthesis gas (syngas) by means of conventional steam reforming and secondary autothermal reforming. Then, the syngas is converted into Methanol.

Granulated Urea Production from Ammonia (Self-Stripping Process)
This study approaches the economics of Granulated Urea production from ammonia and carbon dioxide in the United States through Saipem's (formerly Snamprogetti) ammonia stripping technology. In this process, ammonia and carbon dioxide are converted to Urea via ammonium carbamate intermediate. The non-converted carbamate is stripped from the Urea solution by excess ammonia and decomposed back to ammonia and carbon dioxide, which are recycled to the Urea synthesis.
