Succinic Acid Production from Maleic Anhydride
Succinic Acid Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs
This report analyses the economics of a Succinic Acid production from maleic anhydride. In this process, maleic anhydride is first hydrogenated to produce succinic anhydride, which is then hydrated to produce Succinic Acid. The economic analysis presented is based on a plant constructed in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Succinic Acid production and related Succinic Acid production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Succinic Acid production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Succinic Acid plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Succinic Acid plant operating costs (Opex).
The Succinic Acid production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Succinic Acid plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Succinic Acid plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

The process under analysis comprises four major sections: (1) Hydrogenation; (2) Intermediate Purification; (3) Hydration; and (4) Finishing.
Hydrogenation. Fresh hydrogen is mixed with excess hydrogen, compressed and fed with molten maleic anhydride to the first reactor. The hydrogenation reaction is carried out in inert atmosphere in multiple continuous-stirred-tank reactors equipped with jackets for reaction heat removal. The reaction product comprises, besides the desired succinic anhydride, gamma-butyrolactone, butyric acid and traces of other components that may also be generated by hydrogenation of maleic anhydride.
Intermediate Purification. The product of hydrogenation reaction is directed to a filter to separate and recover catalyst. The catalyst-free product is despressurized, so excess hydrogen can be collected and is recycled to reaction. The filtrated is routed to a vacuum distillation, where light side-products formed in the reaction are separated from the succinic anhydride. The molten product is cooled, solidified and transformed into flakes.
Hydration. In a dissolution vessel, the succinic anhydride flakes are mixed with hot, demineralized water. Succinic anhydride reacts with the hot water, forming a solution of Succinic Acid.
Finishing. The Succinic Acid solution is subjected to pressure reduction and cooling, Succinic Acid solubility changes and it precipitates. The succinic acid crystals are separated from the solution via centrifugation and are dried under vacuum. The solution are recycled to the dissolution vessel. Finally, the dried crystals are packed.
