Syndiotactic Polystyrene Production

Polystyrene Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs

15 kta United States-based plant | 107 Pages | Issue D | Q3 2024
Starting at $799 USD | See Report Editions Prices

This report analyses the economics of Syndiotactic Polystyrene (SPS) production from styrene in the United States, via a typical continuous bulk polymerization process. SPS can be obtained with stereospecific catalysts of the Ziegler-Natta type.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Polystyrene production and related Polystyrene production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Polystyrene production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Polystyrene plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Polystyrene plant operating costs (Opex).

The Polystyrene production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Polystyrene plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Polystyrene plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Polystyrene Production Cost Report Process Overview
Product

Polystyrene. Polystyrene (a.k.a. PS, Thermocol), a thermoplastic polymer with a high molecular weight, is manufactured from the styrene monomer. This material, commonly referred to as PS, exhibits characteristics of hardness, rigidity, and exceptional transparency, accompanied by commendable chemical resistance. Due to its versatility, polystyrene finds extensive application and ranks among the most widely produced polymers globally. The prevailing form of commercialized polystyrene is known as General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS), though it is also available as Expandable Polystyrene (EPS) and High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS). Scrap polystyrene also has its value on the market. Additionally, the polymer lends itself to easy processing through techniques such as injection molding, extrusion, and thermoforming.

Raw Material

Styrene. Styrene is a largely available commodity generally produced from ethylbenzene by several means. One of the commercial routes for styrene production relies on the alkylation of benzene with ethylene for generating the ethylbenzene, which is then dehydrogenated to styrene in vapor phase with steam.

High Impact Polystyrene Production

This study presents the economics of High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) production from styrene in the United States, via a typical continuous bulk polymerization process, which occurs in the presence of polybutadiene. The process is split into a pre-polymerization and a polymerization step. The first step is conducted in CSTRs and the second in plug-flow reactors.
