This report analyzes the economics of a process for the production of Liquid Aluminum Chlorohydrate from metallic aluminum in the United States. The economic analysis targets the production of Aluminum Chlorohydrate having 23-24 wt% of aluminum as aluminum oxide (Al2O3).

The report provides a comprehensive study of Polyaluminum Chloride production and related Polyaluminum Chloride production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Polyaluminum Chloride production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Polyaluminum Chloride plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Polyaluminum Chloride plant operating costs (Opex).

The Polyaluminum Chloride production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Polyaluminum Chloride plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Polyaluminum Chloride plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Polyaluminum Chloride Production Cost Report Process Schematic

In this process, hydrochloric acid is first diluted with water then continuously passed through a fixed bed of aluminum. The reaction proceeds as the acid flows through the metal, generating heat, hydrogen and the Aluminum Chlorohydrate product.

From an overflow pipe of the reactor comes out a water solution of Aluminum Chlorohydroxide, which is cooled and stored as main product. The reactor medium is maintained in reflux conditions by a condenser that recycles the vaporized hydrogen chloride and lets the generated hydrogen flow to a caustic scrubber, where some acid that was carried along is removed. Pure hydrogen leaves the scrubber as a process by-product.
