Phosgene Production

Phosgene Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs

100 kta United States-based plant | 107 Pages | Issue A | Q2 2025
Starting at $799 USD | See Report Editions Prices

This report presents the costs associated with the construction of a plant producing Phosgene from chlorine and carbon monoxide over activated carbon in the United States.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Phosgene production and related Phosgene production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Phosgene production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Phosgene plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Phosgene plant operating costs (Opex).

The Phosgene production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Phosgene plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Phosgene plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Phosgene Production Cost Report Process Schematic

The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) Reaction and (2) Purification.

Reaction. Carbon monoxide and chlorine gas are mixed and fed to vertical shell and tube reactors, where such components react generating Phosgene. The reactors are filled with activated carbon, which serve as catalyst. Excess carbon monoxide is used, so that all chlorine reacts in this step.

Purification. The effluent from the reactors is cooled so that the Phosgene generated is condensed and separated from recycle gas. The condensed Phosgene is chilled, passed through adsorber beds for the removal of chlorine and carbon tetrachloride and distilled – the high purity Phosgene obtained is then directly sent to consumers. The gas separated from the Phosgene, rich in carbon monoxide, is recycled. Vent gases purged throughout the process are scrubbed against a caustic solution to be freed from residual phosgene and other impurities.
