Commodity Production Costs Report
Carbon Monoxide Production
Carbon Monoxide Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs
This report presents the economics of a typical cryogenic partial condensation process for Carbon Monoxide (CO) production from synthesis gas (syngas) in the United States. In this process, CO and hydrogen from syngas are separated in heat exchangers at cryogenic temperatures.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Carbon Monoxide production and related Carbon Monoxide production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Carbon Monoxide production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Carbon Monoxide plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Carbon Monoxide plant operating costs (Opex).
The Carbon Monoxide production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Carbon Monoxide plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Carbon Monoxide plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

The process under analysis comprises three major sections: (1) partial condensation; (2) distillation; and (3) products compression.
* Partial condensation. The syngas feed is initially treated for the removal of impurities that would freeze downstream, mainly water and carbon dioxide. The treatment consists in passing the gas through molecular sieves. The treated feed gas is then cooled against products in plate fin exchangers ("cold exchanger" and "warm exchanger") and by providing heat in the reboiler of the CO-CH4 splitter. Such cooling causes the liquefaction of Carbon Monoxide and methane, which are separated from gaseous hydrogen by means of gas/liquid separation vessels and routed to the CO-CH4 splitter, downstream.
* Distillation. The condensed Carbon Monoxide and methane are fed to a distillation column, in which a methane rich stream is recovered from the bottoms and Carbon Monoxide is recovered from the top. The Carbon Monoxide stream is warmed in the cold exchanger and subsequently in the warm exchanger (not shown in the diagram), and routed to a compression step downstream. The stream containing methane and residual Carbon Monoxide from column bottom, similarly, is warmed in both plate fin exchangers and sold as fuel.
* Products compression. Carbon Monoxide and hydrogen separated in the process are compressed to be than distributed as products at required pressures.

Toluene Diisocyanate from Toluene (Liquid-Phase Phosgenation)
This report presents the economics of a typical liquid-phase phosgenation process for Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI) production from toluene and chlorine in the USA. Initially, toluene is submitted to a dinitration to produce dinitrotoluene (DNT), which is then hydrogenated to toluenediamine (TDA). This TDA is reacted with phosgene in liquid phase to yield TDI product. The phosgene used is generated from chlorine in an on-site unit.
