Commodity Production Costs Report
Pentaerythritol Production from Acetaldehyde and Methanol
Pentaerythritol Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs
This study provides the economics of Pentaerythritol production starting from acetaldehyde and methanol in the United States. In this process, methanol is first converted to formaldehyde over a silver catalyst, which is then combined with acetaldehyde in alkaline medium to form Pentaerythritol.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Pentaerythritol production and related Pentaerythritol production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Pentaerythritol production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Pentaerythritol plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Pentaerythritol plant operating costs (Opex).
The Pentaerythritol production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Pentaerythritol plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Pentaerythritol plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Product
Pentaerythritol. Pentaerythritol (a.k.a. PER) is an organic compound in the polyol class. It is an odorless white solid, with four hydroxyl groups in its structure, allowing the attachment of four groups (similar or not), and, hence, the synthesis of greatly branched compounds/structures. For this characteristic, pentaerythritol and its derivatives have a wide variety of applications.
Raw Materials
Methanol. Methanol is a simple alcohol used as a solvent, antifreeze, and a feedstock for producing formaldehyde, acetic acid, and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). It is also an alternative fuel in various energy applications. Methanol is produced from synthesis gas and is stored as a liquid. In addition to its widespread use in chemicals and fuels, methanol is increasingly used in the production of biodiesel and fuel cells, highlighting its role in renewable energy technologies.
Acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde (also known as ethanal) is an important aldehyde, mainly used as chemical intermediate in the production of acetic acid, paracetic acid and pyridine basis.
