This study presents an economic analysis for a process similar to UOP's Sorbex technology for m-Xylene recovery from mixed xylenes considering a plant located in the United States. In this process, m-Xylene is recovered from a mixture of C8 aromatics via an adsorptive separation.

m-Xylene. m-Xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon used primarily in the production of isophthalic acid, a key ingredient in resins, coatings, and PET production. It also serves as a solvent in various industrial processes. m-Xylene is obtained from crude oil refining and stored as a liquid. It is crucial to industries producing strong, corrosion-resistant materials for packaging and construction.

Raw Material

Mixed Xylenes. Mixed xylenes refer to a mixture containing benzene homologues with formula C8H10, encompassing three isomeric dimethylbenzenes - o-xylene, m-xylene, and p-xylene – and usually ethylbenzene. Mixed xylenes are produced on commercial scale mainly from catalytic reformate, pyrolysis gasoline, toluene disproportionation product, and coke-oven light oil. Most of mixed xylenes are recovered for the production of Paraxylene. To a lesser extent, mixed xylenes are used for orthoxylene production and gasoline blending. Purified xylenes, in turn, are used in a number of products including plasticizers and polyester fibers, photographic films, beverage bottles, etc.
