Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs

180 kta United States-based plant | 107 Pages | Issue B | Q3 2024

This report provides the economics of a typical Ethylene Vinyl Acetate production process from ethylene and vinyl acetate (VAM) in the United States. The process examined in this report employs a high-pressure autoclave polymerization.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Ethylene Vinyl Acetate production and related Ethylene Vinyl Acetate production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Ethylene Vinyl Acetate production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Ethylene Vinyl Acetate plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Ethylene Vinyl Acetate plant operating costs (Opex).

The Ethylene Vinyl Acetate production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Ethylene Vinyl Acetate plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Ethylene Vinyl Acetate plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Production Cost Report Process Schematic

The process under analysis comprises three major sections: (1) Polymerization; (2) Separation; and (3) Extrusion and Packaging.

Polymerization. Fresh ethylene is fed to a primary compressor to be pressurized to 210 bar. The outlet stream is mixed with dried fresh and recycled vinyl acetate monomer (VAM), and an unreacted monomers stream recovered downstream. This mixture is pressurized to 1500 bar in a secondary compressor, and then fed to a tubular reactor at different injection points, where polymerization takes place. The reactor outlet is expanded to 250 bar and sent to the separation section.

Separation. Firstly, a High-Pressure (HP) Separation divides the molten copolymer from unreacted monomers, which are recycled to the 2nd compressor and directed to a VAM recycle condenser. Waxes formed during the polymerization are condensed and sent to disposal. The bottom stream from the HP Separation is passed through a Low-Pressure (LP) Separation, operating at 1.5 bar, to remove remaining unreacted monomers, which are sent to Wax Removal. The copolymer melt is sent to extrusion. A stream from the VAM recycle condenser is fed to a distillation column, were VAM is recovered and recycled to the second compressor, and heavies are wasted.

Extrusion and Packaging. The copolymer melt from the LP Separation is further fed into an extruder, which is used to incorporate the required additives, as well as to pelletize the polymer. The product is then sent to Blending Silos & Packaging, where it is packaged and sent to storage.
