This study presents an economical analysis of Ethyl tert-Butyl Ether (ETBE) production from isobutylene and ethanol in the United States. In this process, isobutylene obtained from a butane hydrogenation plant is submitted to a etherification reaction with ethanol conducted in two steps. The first step is in a conventional reactor and the second in a reactive distillation column.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether production and related Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether plant operating costs (Opex).

The Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether Production Cost Report Process Overview
Product

Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether. Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether (a.k.a. ETBE, 2-Ethoxy-2-Methyl-Propane) is an aliphatic ether having ethyl and tert-butyl as the two alkyl components, manufactured by etherification of isobutylene with ethanol, in the presence of an acidic ion-exchange resin catalyst. ETBE has a lower Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) and better octane properties than MTBE. As a pure component, ETBE appears as clear light yellow liquid. It is miscible with alcohol, ethyl ether, and Slightly miscible with water.

Raw Materials

Isobutylene. Isobutylene (also known as Isobutene) is one of the butylene isomers, used as an intermediate in the production of MTBE, ETBE, isooctane, and methacrolein. Polymerization of Isobutylene produces butyl rubber. Most of times, C4 isomers are produced commercially as by-products from petroleum refinery/petrochemical processes. Isobutylene, specifically, can be produced on commercial scale from processes based on the dehydration of tert-butyl alcohol and on the catalytic dehydrogenation of isobutane.

Ethanol. Ethanol is a versatile solvent and chemical intermediate used in personal care products, coatings, and pharmaceuticals. It is also used as a biofuel component in gasoline blends. Ethanol is produced by fermentation of sugars or starches and is stored as a liquid. Its role in biofuels contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation fuels.
