This report presents the economics of Polybutadiene production from butadiene in the United States, via a typical solution process. In this process, butadiene is polymerized in the presence of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst and a solvent to produce Polybutadiene.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Butadiene Rubber production and related Butadiene Rubber production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Butadiene Rubber production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Butadiene Rubber plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Butadiene Rubber plant operating costs (Opex).

The Butadiene Rubber production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Butadiene Rubber plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Butadiene Rubber plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Butadiene Rubber Production Cost Report Process Overview
Product

Butadiene Rubber. Butadiene Rubber (also known as BR and polybutadiene) is a diene polymer produced from butadiene. Being one of the largest volume synthetic rubber produced, this elastomeric polymer can have a variety of different properties depending on the ratio of its microstructural units and its tacticity. Most of its production is destined to the tires industry, followed by the improvement of plastics mechanical properties. In the polymerization, the butadiene monomer can connect to the polymer chain in three different ways – referred to as cis, trans and vinyl -, in such a way that polymers with different properties can be produced, for different end-uses. The type and properties of the Polybutadiene are dictated by a number of factors, such as the catalyst used, monomer concentration, addition of modifiers, etc. In fact, a number of forms can result from the polymerization of butadiene, including high cis, medium cis, low cis, trans, and high vinyl polybutadiene.

Raw Material

Butadiene. Butadiene is a commodity mainly produced as a byproduct of ethylene crackers. More specifically, it is extracted from the C4 hydrocarbons stream in naphtha-based crackers. The largest single use of butadiene is in the production of SBR and styrene-butadiene latexes.
