Barium Nitrate. Barium Nitrate is a salt composed of barium and the nitrate ion. Like most barium salts, it is colorless, toxic, and soluble in water. Industrial production can follow two main routes. In the first, barium carbonate is suspended in recycled mother lye and reacted with nitric acid. The nitrate is then crystallized, if necessary with vacuum evaporation. The second procedure consists of reacting a barium sulfide solution, with nitric acid. The Barium Nitrate is then crystallized at low temperatures.
Raw Materials
Nitric Acid. Nitric acid is a strong oxidizing acid used in the production of fertilizers, explosives, and in various chemical syntheses. It also plays a critical role in metal processing and the production of nitrates. Nitric acid is produced by oxidizing ammonia via the Ostwald process and is stored as a liquid. Its ability to act as both an oxidant and a nitrating agent makes it a key component in the production of ammonium nitrate for both agricultural and industrial applications.
Barium Carbonate. Barium Carbonate is a chemical used in ceramics, glassmaking, and as a rodenticide. In ceramics, it acts as a flux to improve the properties of glazes and reduce defects. Produced by reacting barium sulfide with sodium carbonate, it is stored as a white powder.
