Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Styrene/Acrylonitrile (SAN) Resin production from styrene and acrylonitrile in the United States, via a typical bulk copolymerization process.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Styrene Acrylonitrile Resin production and related Styrene Acrylonitrile Resin production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Styrene Acrylonitrile Resin production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Styrene Acrylonitrile Resin plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Styrene Acrylonitrile Resin plant operating costs (Opex).
The Styrene Acrylonitrile Resin production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Styrene Acrylonitrile Resin plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Styrene Acrylonitrile Resin plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Schematic

The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) Polymerization; and (2) Finishing.
Polymerization. The acrylonitrile and styrene monomers are copolymerized to SAN. The monomers are first mixed and then fed to a set of plug flow reactors connected in series, in which the polymerization reaction takes place. Monomers and ethylbenzene recovered downstream are also fed to the reactor. While the polymerization is exothermic, reaction heat is removed from both reactor cylinders by means of a cooling media. The polymerization is conducted at 150 °C, and pressures of ca. 1 bar to about 73% conversion.
Finishing. The resulting polymer slurry, with a solid content of between 60 and 90%, is submitted to a devolatilization step where monomers are recovered. These monomers are fed to a distillation column where impurities heavier than that components are removed. The purified stream is recycled. The SAN melt passes through an extrusion and pelletizing system, is packed and stored.
