Report Abstract
This report examines the costs related to Dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT) production from p-xylene and methanol in the United States, via typical oxidation and esterification processes. In this process, operations theoretically take place in alternate oxidation and esterification (with methanol) phases. P-xylene is oxidized to p-toluic acid, which is converted to p-methyl toluate, then to methyl terephthalate and ,finally, to DMT.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Dimethyl Terephthalate production and related Dimethyl Terephthalate production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Dimethyl Terephthalate production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Dimethyl Terephthalate plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Dimethyl Terephthalate plant operating costs (Opex).
The Dimethyl Terephthalate production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Dimethyl Terephthalate plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Dimethyl Terephthalate plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Dimethyl Terephthalate. Dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT) is a key intermediate in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyester fibers, widely used in packaging, textiles, and engineering plastics. DMT is produced via the esterification of terephthalic acid with methanol. It is stored as a solid and is central to industries producing strong, flexible, and durable plastics and fibers.
Raw Materials
Methanol. Methanol is one of the most important chemical raw materials, used as a solvent, starting material in the production of chemicals and in the fuel sector. Currently, more than 95% of commercial methanol is synthetically produced from synthesis gas, or syngas, which is a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
Paraxylene. p-Xylene, or paraxylene is the most important commercial isomer among the xylenes group. Almost all of its production is converted to Terephthalic Acid and dimethyl terephthalate. p-Xylene is primarily manufactured by naphtha catalytic reforming, followed by separation of the xylenes isomers, crystallization or absorption for pxylene separation.

Other Dimethyl Terephthalate Production Cost Reports
Dimethyl Terephthalate from Toluene and Methanol
It presents the economics of Dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT) production from toluene and methanol in a plant located in the United States. Toluene is converted to p-xylene via a catalytic disproportionation process similar to ExxonMobil PxMax. The p-xylene is oxidized to p-toluic acid, which is esterified with methanol to generate DMT.
