Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of the production of a mixture of Benzene, Toluene and Xylenes (BTX) from wood chips. The economic analysis is based on a plant located in the United States. First, the biomass is dried and crushed. Then, the wood sawdust undergoes catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) yielding an effluent syngas composed of aromatics, olefins and volatiles. BTX is finally separated from the other components.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Aromatics BTX production and related Aromatics BTX production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Aromatics BTX production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Aromatics BTX plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Aromatics BTX plant operating costs (Opex).
The Aromatics BTX production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Aromatics BTX plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Aromatics BTX plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Product
BTX Mixture. Aromatics BTX (a.k.a. BTX) refers to mixtures of the aromatic hydrocarbons benzene, toluene, and xylene isomers in variable proportions. These chemicals can be obtained from several processes. However, most BTX production is based on the recovery of aromatics from the catalytic reforming of naphtha in petroleum refineries. BTX aromatics are very important petrochemical intermediates to produce a large number of petrochemicals. The most relevant component of BTX mixture is benzene, followed by toluene, and xylene.
Raw Material
Wood Chips. Wood Chips are small pieces of wood used as a raw material in the production of paper, fiberboard, and energy. Their high moisture content makes them ideal for combustion in biomass power generation. Wood chips are obtained from forestry and milling operations and are stored in piles or silos. Their role in renewable energy production and pulp manufacturing is crucial for sustainable industries.

Other Aromatics BTX Production Cost Reports
BTX Production from Ethane
In this study, the process reviewed is a typical aromatization process producing a mixture of Benzene, Toluene and Xylenes (BTX) from ethane. In this analysis, ethane is first dehydrogenated to ethylene, which is oligomerized. The oligomers then cyclize to form naphthenes. They are finally dehydrogenated, yielding aromatics. The economic assessment assumes a plant located in the United States.

Ethanol from Wood Chips (Gasification and Mixed Alcohols Synthesis)
This report presents the economics of Anhydrous Ethanol production from wood chips in the United States. In the process examined, wood feedstock is submitted to direct gasification, producing synthesis gas. Next, the syngas is converted to mixed alcohols. The alcohol mixture is then distilled, yielding ethanol and a mixture of higher molecular weight alcohols.

Dimethyl Ether Production from Wood Chips
This report analyses the economics of producing Dimethyl Ether (DME) from wood chips in the United States. In the process under analysis, the wood chips are dried and then subjected to pyrolysis and partial oxidation for generating synthesis gas (syngas). Syngas is used for methanol generation and methanol then becomes the feed for a catalytic dehydration process that yields DME.
