About Zinc Oxide
About Zinc Oxide. Zinc Oxide is a white odorless solid insoluble in water and alcohol and soluble in acid and caustic solutions (amphoteric behavior). Due to its nontoxic aspect and color stability, it promptly replaced white lead as the main white pigment after the development of the French Industrial Process, later being replaced by Titanium Dioxide. In the second half of the 19th century, white zinc started to be used to reduce the time of the rubber vulcanization process, expanding its use and turning it into its primary usage, also increasing the durability and thermal conductivity of the rubber.
Zinc Oxide Handling. Zinc Oxide should be stored in tightly closed containers in a dry and well-ventilated place at ambient temperature (15 °C to 25 °C). It should also be stored away from strong acids and strong alkalis. No special precautions are needed if the material is used correctly.
Zinc Oxide Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Zinc Oxide are listed below.
- Zinc (French air oxidation process),
- Zinc oxide concentrates/zinc scrap + coal (American direct process),
- Zinc sulfate (calcination)
Zinc Oxide Uses. The uses and applications of Zinc Oxide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Zinc Oxide are rubber grade, gold seal (purity of 99.9%), white seal (purity of 99.8%), and red seal (min. purity of 99.5%).
