About Vinyl Chloride
About Vinyl Chloride. Vinyl Chloride (a.k.a. VCM, Vinyl Chloride Monomer, Chloroethene) is an organic compound, in the organochloride class. In room temperature, VCM is an ethereal/sweet odor gas; however, in industry, it is most often handled as a liquid. Vinyl Chloride is a major chemical commodity, and it is among the top twenty largest petrochemicals in world production.
First commercially produced by catalytic hydrochlorination of acetylene, Vinyl Chloride nowadays is largely produced through ethylene-based, balanced Vinyl Chloride process. VCM production routes development have been tightly connected to the availability of key raw materials, particularly ethylene and chlorine, along with concerns related to energy efficiency, environmental impact, safety, and process reliability. The most important reaction of VCM is its polymerization and copolymerization, in the presence of a radical-generating initiator.
Vinyl Chloride Handling. Vinyl Chloride should be labeled as highly flammable due to its low flash point (-78 °C) and highly toxic, confirmed as a carcinogen and causing fatal damage upon acute exposure, on storage and transportation. Vinyl chloride is transported via pipeline, and in railroad tank cars and tanker ships. The presence of peroxide from vinyl chloride and air can initiate polymerization of vinyl chloride. For this reason, the addition of a stabilizer can be added to prevent polymerization. Inhibitors such as hydroquinone are often added, particularly when shipping long distances in warmer climates.
Vinyl Chloride Production. Originally, production of Vinyl Chloride on a commercial scale was based on the reaction of HCl with acetylene derived from calcium carbide. Throughout the 20th century, as ethylene became plentiful, new Vinyl Chloride production routes were developed having ethylene and chlorine as main raw materials. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Vinyl Chloride are listed below.
- Acetylene (hydrochlorination),
- Ethylene dichloride (dehydrochlorination)
Vinyl Chloride Uses. The uses and applications of Vinyl Chloride may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Vinyl Chloride are technical/pure grade (min. 99.9% purity); and commercial grade (min. 98% purity).
