About Trimethylolpropane

About Trimethylolpropane. Trimethylolpropane (a.k.a. TMP) is an organic compound, in the alcohol class, specifically classified as a triol. It is a white, odorless salt, soluble in water and in most organic solvents, with hygroscopic characteristics. Trimethylolpropane is considered a building block in the polymer industry, and is produced on commercial scale from butyraldehyde and formaldehyde.

Trimethylolpropane is produced on commercial scale from butyraldehyde and formaldehyde. Basically, those chemicals undergo a base-catalyzed aldol addition forming the intermediate 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)butanal, which further reacts with formaldehyde (Cannizzaro reaction) yielding TMP. Either sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide may be used as bases.

Trimethylolpropane Handling. Trimethylolpropane is hygroscopic, so in transportation and/or storage it absorbs water and undergoes slow changes in structure. For this reason, hermetically closed containers are recommended. It is also classified as flammable (flash point at 174°C), so it must be transported and stored away from heat, sparks, flame, or other sources of ignition. Silos and tanks employed for trimethylolpropane storage are, preferably, made from stainless steel.

Trimethylolpropane Production. When it comes to production pathways, Trimethylolpropane production is mostly based on butyraldehyde and formaldehyde, in such a way that different pathways are related to different sources of these chemicals. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Trimethylolpropane are listed below.

  • Formaldehyde + n-butyraldehyde + sodium hydroxide (aldol condensation followed by Cannizzaro reaction),
  • Formaldehyde + propylene + syngas + sodium hydroxide (hydroformylation/aldol condensation followed by Cannizzaro reaction),
  • Methanol + n-butyraldehyde + sodium hydroxide (oxidation/aldol condensation followed by Cannizzaro reaction),
  • Methanol + propylene + syngas + sodium hydroxide (oxidation/hydroformylation/aldol condensation followed by Cannizzaro reaction)

Trimethylolpropane Uses. The uses and applications of Trimethylolpropane may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Trimethylolpropane are technical grade; lubricant grade; and liquid form (hot melt).
