About Tert Butyl Alcohol
About Tert Butyl Alcohol. Tert-Butyl Alcohol (a.k.a. TBA, Tert-Butanol) is an organic compound, in the alcohol class. It is a colorless solid, with a pleasant camphor-like odor, soluble both in water, ethanol, and ether. TBA has a wide range of applications, ranging from its use as a chemical solvent to a flavoring ingredient in the food industry.
Tert Butyl Alcohol Handling. TBA must be stored tightly closed in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place. Pure t-Butyl Alcohol melting point is about 25 °C, so it has to be continuously heated to guarantee flowability. As a volatile and flammable liquid, TBA must be kept away from heat and ignition sources. This chemical reacts violently with oxidizing agents such as peroxides, nitrates, and chlorates and with other incompatible substances like strong bases, such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. Containers that are opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage. TBA is transported in rail and road tank cars, drums, tanker vessels, and containers.
Tert Butyl Alcohol Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Tert Butyl Alcohol are listed below.
- t-Butyl hydroperoxide + Propylene (Arco TBA-PO process; coproduced with propylene oxide),
- Isobutylene (hydration),
- Isobutylene + Formaldehyde (carbonyl condensation; byproduct of isoprenol production)
Tert Butyl Alcohol Uses. The uses and applications of Tert-Butyl Alcohol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Tert-Butyl Alcohol are pure grade (min. purity of 99.5%) and azeotropic grade (water content of 11-12%). Although the smaller purity of the azeotropic grade, it can be advantageous for handling because it is liquid and pumpable over a much wider temperature range than pure grade (melting point about 25 °C).
