About Syngas

About Syngas. Syngas (a.k.a. Synthesis Gas) is composed primarily of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. It is a combustible gas used as a fuel source or as an intermediate for chemicals production. Syngas may be produced from several carbon sources, either fossil feedstocks (e.g. coal, petroleum or natural gas) or renewable feedstocks (e.g. biomass, wood). This gas can be produced on industrial scale via different routes, including steam methane reforming, partial oxidation, and dry reforming; its composition varies significantly according to the process technology, the feedstock and process operating conditions.

Due to the availability of low-cost feedstock, the Syngas production process mainly used is the steam-reforming of methane-rich natural gas. Such Syngas produced captively is, in turn, mainly used in the manufacture of methanol.

Syngas Handling. Synthesis gas storage is not common, because it is usually fed directly for use. However, it can be stored in underground low and high pressure tanks, in existing pipelines or in underground locations.

Syngas Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Syngas are listed below.

  • Natural gas + oxygen (SBA process; coproduced with acetylene),
  • Naphtha, heavy/natural gas + oxygen (Montecatini autothermic process; coproduced with acetylene),
  • Natural gas + oxygen (BASF partial combustion process; coproduced with acetylene),
  • Coal/lignite + water + oxygen/air (Winkler coal gasification process),
  • Naphtha, heavy/natural gas (ICI desulfurisation/steam reforming process)

Syngas Uses. The uses and applications of Syngas may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Syngas are gaseous mixtures of hydrogen and carbon monoxide with H2:CO molar ratio ranging between 0.6 and 6.5.
