About Sodium Aluminum Hexafluoride. Sodium Aluminum Hexafluoride (a.k.a. Na3AlF6, Cryolite), an inorganic salt, is a white, odorless solid discovered in 1799. It serves as a key component in the bath used for the electrolytic production of aluminum metal in industrial settings. While occurring naturally as the mineral Cryolite, all commercially available products are synthetically manufactured. However, aluminum fluoride (AlF3) is increasingly gaining recognition as a notable alternative to both natural and synthetic Cryolite.
Sodium Aluminum Hexafluoride Handling. Sodium Hexafluoroaluminate is commonly transported in 25 kg bags, should be stored in well-closed containers, and must be kept away from food and feedstuffs. Also, it must be stored in an area without drain or sewer access. Aluminum alkyls are usually very reactive to moisture and compounds with active hydrogen. Therefore, it is recommended to store them in an inert atmosphere, such as under a blanket of inert gas.
