About Potassium Nitrate
About Potassium Nitrate. Potassium Nitrate is a crystalline salt that is found as white to gray solid. It is mainly used as a fertilizer, gunpowder ingredient and as food preservative additive which suppress bacteria in meats and some cheeses. It is noncombustible, however it accelerates the burning of combustible substances which may result in an explosion that releases toxic oxides of nitrogen.
Potassium Nitrate Handling. As an oxidant, potassium nitrate must be transported and stored away from reducing agent and combustible substances as it accelerates the burning of those substances, resulting in explosion and release of toxic oxides of nitrogen. There is also a dangerous fire and explosion risk when shocked or heated. However, the product is non-reactive under normal conditions of storage and transportation. Depending on the grade, the product can be sold as a fine crystalline product or as prills. Potassium nitrate may be shipped via air, rail, road, and water, in containers bearing the label, 'Oxidizer'.
Potassium Nitrate Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Potassium Nitrate are listed below.
- Potassium chloride + nitric acid (salt formation),
- Potassium chloride + sodium nitrate (salt formation)
Potassium Nitrate Uses. The uses and applications of Potassium Nitrate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Potassium Nitrate are fertilizer (min. 95 wt% KNO3, density of 1.1-1.3 kg/L, fine crystals or prills) and technical (min. 99 wt% KNO3, density of 1.1 kg/L, fine crystals).
