About Potassium Carbonate
About Potassium Carbonate. Potassium Carbonate is an inorganic compound, in the salt class. It is a white hygroscopic salt, soluble in water and methanol but insoluble in other organic solvents like acetone and ether. Its major market used to be in the manufacture of specialty glasses, but nowadays Potash is being increasingly used in fracking applications.
Potassium Carbonate Handling. As a highly hygroscopic compound, Potash must be stored in a cool, dry area, away from moisture. Avoid contact with incompatible substances like lime, as it would form corrosive potassium hydroxide (KOH). It is recommended to store and transport Potassium Carbonate in iron, steel, stainless steel, rubber lined steel, or phenolic lined steel vessels. On the other hand, the use of aluminum, zinc, brass, bronze, and copper is not recommended due to the potential for a reaction. Potassium Carbonate is transported and shipped to bulk customers in 50 and 100 pounds multiwall paper bags, 400 pounds fiber drums, 2000 pounds bulk bags, hopper and pneumatic trucks, and in hopper and pneumatic railcars.
Potassium Carbonate Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Potassium Carbonate are listed below.
- Potassium Hydroxide + Carbon Dioxide (salt formation)
Potassium Carbonate Uses. The uses and applications of Potassium Carbonate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Potassium Carbonate are aqueous solution (30-52% potash); American Chemical Society reagent grade (ACS - min 99% purity, granular or crystal, anhydrous or sesquihydrate); Food Chemical Codex grade (FCC - min 99% purity, granular or crystal, anhydrous or sesquihydrate); United States Pharmacopeia grade (USP - min 99.5% purity, crystal); and biotech grade (min 99.5% purity, powder).
