About Polyvinylidene Chloride
About Polyvinylidene Chloride. PVDC Resins (a.k.a. Polyvinylidene Chloride Resins, Vinylidene Chloride Copolymer) are clear semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymers, that were among the first synthetic ones to be commercialized. They are produced by the polymerization of a vinylidene chloride monomer with other monomers such as acrylic esters and unsaturated carboxyl groups. Their most valuable property is low permeability to a wide range of gases and vapors. Polyvinylidene chloride polymer came about by accident in 1933, but its best-known use was from 1953 onwards, when it was used in a plastic wrapper for food.
It is worth mentioning that PVDC Homopolymer is a crystalline, brittle material unsuitable for further processing in such a way that it is not normally commercialized. As previously mentioned, commercial PVDC products are copolymers of vinylidene chloride (more than 50%) with small amounts of other monomers. The most used comonomers are vinyl chloride, acrylic acid, and acrylonitrile.
Polyvinylidene Chloride Copolymers are manufactured via two commercial processes of similar relevance: suspension or emulsion polymerization. Both techniques involve polymerization of vinylidene chloride and the comonomer(s), subsequently dewatering by filtering or centrifuging the polymer and drying the resultant wet solids (for polymer powder preparation).
Polyvinylidene Chloride Handling. It must be stored indoors in cool, and dry area, and leave containers tightly closed. Also, it is necessary put away from direct sunshine.
Polyvinylidene Chloride Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Polyvinylidene Chloride are listed below.
- Vinylidene chloride + vinyl chloride/methyl methacrylate/acrylonitrile/ethyl acrylate/methyl acrylate (emulsion polymerisation)
Polyvinylidene Chloride Uses. The uses and applications of PVDC Resins may vary according to its specification. The main forms of PVDC Resins are emulsion latex and solid resin. In addition, a number of comonomers can be used with different composition in the PVDC production (e.g., vinyl chloride, acrylic acid, and acrylonitrile).
