About Polyvinyl Acetate

About Polyvinyl Acetate. Polyvinyl Acetate (a.k.a. PVA, White Glue, Wood Glue) is a thermoplastic high polymer, and one of the most important poly(vinyl esters) together with vinyl acetate copolymers. It appears as a colorless transparent solid, insoluble in water, gasoline, oils and fats, but soluble in low molecular weight alcohols, esters, benzene and chlorinated hydrocarbons. PVA is produced by polymerization of vinyl acetate with peroxide catalysts. Furthermore, the PVA was patented in 1912, but it was only in 1920 that production for commercial purposes began.

Polyvinyl Acetate Handling. Polyvinyl Acetate should be stored in a cool and well-ventilated area, away from strong oxidizing materials, and under a recommended temperature between 2 °C and 8 °C. The ambient moisture should be controlled, and kept low, as PVA is hygroscopic.

Polyvinyl Acetate Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Polyvinyl Acetate are listed below.

  • Vinyl acetate (emulsion polymerisation)

Polyvinyl Acetate Uses. The uses and applications of Polyvinyl Acetate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Polyvinyl Acetate are Food Chemical Codex (FCC) grade; and British Pharmacopeia (BP) grade.
