About Phosphorus Trichloride. Phosphorus Trichloride (a.k.a. Trichlorophosphane, Phosphorus (III) Chloride) is the most important chemical of the three phosphorus chlorides. It is a very important industrial chemical, mainly used in phosphites and organophosphorus compounds production. It is a colorless volatile liquid at room temperature, corrosive to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, demanding PPE and ventilation for handling. It reacts with water to form phosphoric acid and hydrochloric acid, producing heat. Chlorinated and aromatic solvents can be used to solubilize it.
