About Phosphorus

About Phosphorus. Phosphorus (a.k.a. P4) is a nonmetallic element, with atomic number 15, a member of group 15 of the periodic table. It can be found in three allotropic forms, called red, black and white phosphorus. The red is a violet-brown powder, the black is a black solid, with strong resemblance to graphite, while the white is a transparent crystal, yellow to white with a waxlike form. Phosphorus can be found in nature widespread across the planet, although not in its free elemental form. It occurs primarily in mineral rocks, in the form of phosphorus compounds. The element was discovered in 1669; however, production only began in the 1830s, rapidly growing after World War II. The vast majority of the elemental phosphorus produced is later converted to phosphoric acid and other phosphoric compounds, for applications in the agricultural industry.

Phosphorus Handling. The handling and storage of phosphorus requires a protective layer of water in the recipients. It is usually transported in its liquid form (melting point at 44°C), in railcars, where the element is allowed to solidify; however, the railcars are commonly equipped with a heating jacket for maintaining phosphorus as a liquid. For overseas shipping, tanktainers with reinforced superstructures are used.

Phosphorus Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Phosphorus are listed below.

  • Apatite + coke (or other carbon source) + quartz/silica (electric furnace reduction; production of white phosphorous),
  • White phosphorous (thermal conversion; production of red phosphorus)

Phosphorus Uses. The uses and applications of Phosphorus may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Phosphorus are electronic grade (99.9999 wt% minimum purity) and technical grade (99.99% minimum purity).
