About Phosphorus Pentoxide

About Phosphorus Pentoxide. Phosphorus Pentoxide is a soft, white, snow-like powder with a phosphorus-like odor. It is the anhydride of phosphoric acid and has a remarkable tendency to take up water, being the most powerful known dehydrating agent under 100 °C. It is the only phosphorus oxide produced commercially.

Phosphorus Pentoxide Handling. Phosphorus Pentoxide must be stored and transported airtight in dry conditions, as it is extremely hygroscopic, reacting violently when in contact with water or aqueous solutions. It must be also separated from combustible substances, reducing agents, strong oxidants, strong bases, and food and feedstuffs. Small amounts are transported in small glass bottles contained in boxes or hermetically sealed metal cans, whereas large quantities are shipped in drums or metal barrels. Mild steel is the preferred material for process equipment construction, storage, or shipping containers when the product is kept dry.
