About Petroleum Jelly
About Petroleum Jelly. Petroleum Jelly is an organic compound, classified as a petroleum hydrocarbon. It is a semi-solid or liquid viscous mixture of hydrocarbons, with a white to yellowish color, insoluble in water and most organic solvents. It was first discovered in 1859, with industrial production beginning in 1872 and production essentially paralleling the refining of crude oil. Currently, petrolatum, for its availability in great quantities, provides lower costs compared to animal and vegetable waxes. For its versatility petrolatum can be used in a wide range of processes and industries.
The enduring appeal of petroleum jelly lies in its versatility, affordability, and trusted efficacy, making it present in both household medicine cabinets and industrial applications.
Petroleum Jelly Handling. Petroleum jelly can be stored and transported in bags, barrels, and cases. Both forms, liquid and semi-solid should be stored in a cool place and sun-protected since it is a heat-sensitive and fire-dangerous cargo. This product is not classified as a hazardous or dangerous good for transport purposes and can be transported in MS / Plastic barrels and tanker loads. When transported in bags should not be over stowed as this may lead to bonding together of sacks. Must be stored away from materials such as strong acids, bases, and oxidants.
Petroleum Jelly Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Petroleum Jelly are listed below.
- Deasphalted oil (solvent extraction)
Petroleum Jelly Uses. The uses and applications of Petroleum Jelly may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Petroleum Jelly are United States Pharmacopeia (USP) grade; National Formulary (NF) grade; and Food Chemical Codex (FCC) grade.
