About Paraffin Wax
About Paraffin Wax. Paraffin Wax (a.k.a. Petroleum Wax) is an organic compound, in the paraffinic hydrocarbons class. It is a soft odorless white solid, consisting of a mixture of hydrocarbon molecules containing between twenty and forty carbon atoms, insoluble in water, but soluble in ether, benzene, and other organic solvents. Those mixed hydrocarbons can be used in a wide range of applications.
Petroleum wax is typically obtained during oil refining in the vacuum distillation process. However, it can also be synthesized using the Fisher-Tropsh process, with greater control over the chain length of the molecules that make it up. Depending on the average chain length, degree of saturation and branching of the molecules that make it up, the melting point of paraffin varies between 45 and 70 °C, and can be anywhere from a viscous gel to a solid block under ambient conditions.
Paraffin Wax Handling. Paraffin wax can be stored and transported in bags, barrels, and cases. Although melting does not affect the value of the commodity, it should be stowed in a cool place and sun-protected since it is a heat-sensitive and fire-dangerous cargo. When transported in bags should not be over stowed as this may lead to bonding together of sacks. Must be stored away from goods liable to be contaminated by melted wax. Paraffin waxes are transported in liquid form (molten) in road tank trucks, rail tankers, or liquid containers. Solid waxes are marketed in slabs in small and large cartons and sacks, and as pastilles, flakes, and powder in sacks or big bags. They are also supplied in fiberboard and steel drums and in molded cartons.
